Judging of the 2010 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition has been finalised, with 78 artworks selected by regional judges for exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum. The winner of the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition 2010 will walk away with the grand prize of R60 000, the runner-up R15 000 and the five merit winners, R5 000 each. The exhibition of the selected works will run from 9 September to 3 October
Kirkness Guesthouse is only 1.5 kilometers from the Pretoria Art Museum, and our guests can even take a leisurely walk there and back.
Now in its 21st year, the Sasol New Signatures Competition strives to discover South Africa’s freshest talent. This year’s call to entry resulted in 664 entries being submitted from across the country. Pretoria saw the highest number of artworks submitted, with Johannesburg and Cape Town following second and third respectively. The surprise this year was Port Elizabeth, which recorded a relatively low number of entries, yet produced the highest number of selected artworks across all the provinces.
“The standard of work this year has been exceptionally high with a truly uniformed South African visual language emerging across all cultural groups. We saw a good balance of all art mediums represented this year and there was a notable improvement in technical excellence across the board. We are now also seeing a truthful representation of ‘unity through diversity’, a buzz phrase that I feel is only now starting to materialise to its full capacity within the visual arts,” said Peter Binsbergen, the National Chairman of the 2010 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition.
