About Kirkness Guesthouse
The name ‘Kirkness’ has a long tradition in this area. One of the first brick works in Pretoria was owned by, and named after, the Kirkness family. The red bricks made by the Kirkness factory are typical of houses and other buildings in the vicinity. Mr Kirkness had Kirkness House build on Muckleneuck Hill only about 5 minutes drive from Clydesdale and boasted that the whole house was built from rejects from his factory. This stately building is currently home of the Korean ambassador. Other historical buildings that were built with these face bricks include the old Reserve Bank building on Church Square and the Zuid-Afrikaanse Hospital, also on Muckleneuck Hill.
The street that runs behind Loftus was named after Mr Kirkness who was a well-known and honoured member of society at the time when Pretoria started to find its outskirts in what is now known as the ‘Old East’.
Kirkness Guest House is owned by Phia Kotze and Michelle Beneke and was initially used as psychology practice. Since inception the idea was to share this beautiful place and offer it as a global home to travellers. For the last two years we have worked to optimize this facility to welcome local and international guests.
Careful consideration was taken to stay true to original style but incorporate modern leisure, lifestyle and living.
In summer you can catch the early morning sun on the deck outside or enjoy breakfast in the dining area, on the stoep or in winter you can have breakfast in front of the fireplace in the lounge.
Johann and Sina are your hosts and will make sure your stay at Kirkness Guest House is not only comfortable and pleasant but also memorable.
