There is only one week to go untill the third Celebrate Food & Wine Expo in Pretoria, hosted by Afrikaans Hoër Meisies on 2-4 September 2011.

The first and second Celebrate Food & Wine was held in August 2009 and September 2010, as a need was recognized in Pretoria for a good food & wine festival, as well as to create funds for schools having children with special needs.

2011’s Celebrate Food & Wine holds lots of promise as we are taking hands with Sarie Magazine.

Kirkness Guesthouse is directly opposite, and only a leisurely stroll from this year’s venue, Afrikaans Meisies Hoër, at 25 Bond Street, Clydesdale. Kirkness Guesthouse is recommended by TripAdvisor.com 2011 for our excellent accommodation. We offer beautifull rooms at the best prices for exhibitors and visitors who don’t want to miss out on a weekend of Celebration. All the rooms have en-suite bathrooms, Satelite TV with selected channels, Wi-Fi access, and tea and coffee making facilities.

With 18 food exhibitors and 9 wine exhibitors, food demo’s and wine pairing – this is definitely an event not to be missed.

This coming Saturday the Cheetahs are facing the Blue Bulls in the bull ring, Loftus Versfeld.

We at Kirkness Guesthouse love the atmosphere on match days, fans walking the streets and warming up at the various restaurants in the area.

Coming to see a game at Loftus Versfeld Stadium and choosing Kirkness Guesthouse for your accommodation has many added benefits:

Guests get special passes to drive through the barriers that close the streets and get safe, off street parking a mere 300 meters from the stadium.

Did I mention that we are only 300 meters from Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Trademarx Restaurant, and about 500 meters from Eastwood Tavern? Kirkness Guesthouse is a very reasonable stumbling distance if you have been celebrating!

All rooms have en-suite bathrooms, Satelite TV with selected channels, tea and coffee making facilities. And for those cold Pretoria winter nights we have heaters in all the rooms, and electric blankets on all the beds. One of the rooms even has a working red brick fireplace for added warmth, and as this is always the first room to go, it is best to book in advance.

Kirkness Guesthouse Accommodation near Loftus Versfeld is ideal for groups of friends coming to see the game together. A beautiful fireplace in the lounge, a deck with tables, chairs and braai facilities, as well as a sound system for your favourite cd’s, ensures that that it is perfect for pre- and post- game parties.

We have an extra fridge next to the patio for your meat and drinks, and you are more than welcome to use our kitchen facility.

See you at the game!

Upcoming events at Loftus Versfeld Stadium:

The Gautrain is going to start running between Pretoria and Johannesburg any day now. And I can’t wait.

When it first started running between Sandton and Rhodesfield station my sister and I made a morning of it. We drove to Sandton one Sunday morning, had breakfast in the square and then headed to the station. I couldn’t believe we had something so first world in South Africa, and my sister who has never been across our borders thought she was overseas.

We got our golden passes, loaded money on them and then headed down to the platform 12 storeys below streetlevel. Of all the passengers waiting for the train, only two had suitcases, and it was obvious everybody else was there purely for the joyride. Now I know that almost every foreigner, or anyone who has been travelling abroad for that matter, might yawn about our new train. But let me tell you: This is Africa people, and it is bloody amazing!

Now we are all waiting for the announcement that the train is ready to run between O.R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg and Pretoria. I have a vision of myself on the day, clutching my golden pass, with sweaty palms and white knuckles (like an athlete waiting for the starting pistol) waiting to get on the train.

I have seen it doing it’s test runs, and it feels a little surreal (especially now with the yellow African winter landscape), to see this silver bulletshaped train speeding along.

It is going to be so convenient to get to Jo’burg now for all the commuters who work in Johannesburg. But for all of us, and especially guest visiting Kirkness Guesthouse it will be a breeze to go to Rosebank or Sandton for lunch, or a movie that is not showing in Pretoria (Why oh why, Cinema Nouveau?). But best of all will be: getting to and from the airport!

A shuttle from the airport to Kirkness Guesthouse usually costs around R400.00 one way. But very soon our guests will be able to get on the Gautrain at O.R. Tambo, take the train to Hatfield Station, and then get on a bus that will drop them only a few hundred meters from Kirkness Guesthouse. For only R125.00 per person (one-way)!

As soon as we know more and have more details I will post it here. In the meantime you can visit their website at www.gautrain.co.za

Yay!

Our central location is probably one of Kirkness Guest House’s biggest advantages, and because of this we have had an increasing demand for cheaper and more basic accommodation close to training institutions like the ,University of Pretoria, UNISA and the SABS.

In my conversations with people enquiring about this, I have found that a lot of companies expect people to pay for their own accommodation when it comes to training, and a lot of the time people are expected to pay for the training as well. Many people asked me if we don’t have a more basic, cheaper accommodation option.

So the idea for Kirkness Too was born.

Only 700 meters from the main Kirkness Guest House, Kirkness Too is 1.5 km’s from the University of Pretoria, 2km’s form the SABS and 3km’s from UNISA.

We wanted guests who are looking for cheap accommodation to have a comfortable stay, and still get a sense of Kirkness Hospitality, but without too many bells and whistles.

The rooms at Kirkness Too are not en-suite, but use shared bathrooms that are serviced regularly.
Our comfortable beds are still made with beautiful white percale linen, and ensures a luxurious sleeping experience at budget prices. ( I have seen some of the other places that offer budget accommodation and you won’t find a washed-out Big Five duvet on our premises!)

Each room has it’s own tea and coffee making facilities, and TV with local channels. (People are supposed to study, best to keep the distractions to the minimum.)

For breakfast every guest help themselves to tea or coffee, a cerealbar, yoghurt, fruit and rusks.

We are currently running an OPENING SPECIAL at Kirkness Too with these REDICULOUSLY CHEAP RATES:

Single Room: R270.00 per night

Double Room R350.00 per night (R175.00 per person.)

Have a look at http://pretoriaguestaccommodation.co.za/

Kirkness Too offers no frills accommodation, but with everything you need.
Do not even waste your time looking for better accommodation at cheaper rates, because you won’t find it. Book at 012 344 0491, or at http://pretoriaguestaccommodation.co.za/

Keeping dreams alive

Established in 1990, the UNISA Music Foundation’s mission is to promote music in all its forms and expressions at the University of South Africa, as well as in South and Southern Africa.

To achieve this goal, the Music Foundation is responsible to maintain and administer a viable way to organize and present national and international music competitions, concerts, master classes and music tuition projects.

The Music Foundation has built a collection of music instruments for use in the development projects and is also charged with the responsibility to maintain the Rieger Concert organ, Steinway Grand Pianos and the Booth Harpsichord as valuable assists of the University in good order.

The staff of the Music Foundation schedules and manages concerts in the various venues of the different campuses to ensure the optimal use of these facilities and to project a positive image of UNISA.

UNISA Music Festival for the youth in the Tshwane Metro

Under the esteemed patronage of the “Princess of Africa” Yvonne Chaka Chaka, this annual Music Festival aims to explore and promote new talents. The various sections include baroque, classical, romantic and contemporary music for the instrumental category, while the vocal category range from opera to jazz, traditional, kwaito, etc.

Prize money is available for each age group, as well as main prizes for the top achievers. The aim of this music festival is to raise the general performance standard and to encourage participants to dedicated study of their instrumental and vocal skills.

Music Educational Programs

The UNISA Music Foundation is passionate about introducing music literacy and basic instrumental skills to as many of our talented youth as possible on a countrywide basis.

The office of the Music Foundation organizes music lessons on Saturdays during the school term in Soshanguve, Ga Rankuwa, Mamelodi, Tembisa and Atteridgeville while funding projects in other province such as the Musikhane Music Projects in Potchefstroom (Ikageng), Umlazi (KwaZulu Natal), Soweto, various correctional institutions, East London, National Youth Choir Course.

The Foundation evaluates requests for instruments form various community music schools and purchases good instruments with the aid of sponsored funds. These instruments are distributed on an annual loan agreement to the various recipients. The Music xamination Fees of needy students are also sponsored.

Many success stories have emerged from these community projects where the learners are introduced for the first time in their lives to study instruments ranging form the recorder to all the string instruments, woodwinds, brass and keyboard. A good example is one particular learner who started from scratch on the recorder and made such rapid progress that he passed music as a matric subject with only three years.

Concerts

The UNISA Music Foundation presents two concert series annually in the first and second semester, comprising about 50 concerts a year, catering for a wide variety of tastes, styles and instruments.

Apart from providing performance opportunities to local professional musicians, these concerts also feature visiting international artists, frequently in collaboration with embassies in Pretoria.

UNISA National and International Music Competitions

The Music Foundation presents national music competitions in exactly the same format than its international music competitions with the specific aim to accustom young South African musicians to the stringent standards applied internationally. So far a national organ, two piano and one string competition preceded the UNISA International Music Competitions in which the first prize winner and runner-up competed against a selected number of young overseas musicians.

The first International Music Competition (for piano) was held at UNISA in Pretoria in 1982. The winner of this event a Canadian pianist Marc-André Hammelin has since then established himself as a sought after international pianist. Other prize winners at UNISA include sopranos René Flemming and Summu Yo, tenor Johan Botha and Kobie van Rensburg, cellists Alexander Knasyer, and Jerôme Pernoo, violinists Benjamin Schmidt, Dmitri Makhatine. Famous judges include Guido Agosti, Georgy Sandor, Marie Claire Alain, Maria Kliegel, Martina Arroyo, John O’Conor, Sergey Dovensky etc.

4th UNISA National Piano Competition 2011

The 4th UNISA National Piano Competition 2011 is presented to give young South African pianists experience with the requirements and procedures of an international piano competition.

The intention is that the preparation for, and participation in this event will toughen competitors for possible participation in the 12th UNISA International Piano Competition 2012. That is why the repertoire requirements correspond very closely to that of the 2012 international piano competition. Furthermore, competitors will be subject to the same adjudication criteria and processes applicable to international piano competitions.

Accommodation Close to UNISA

Kirkness Guest House is only 3.5 kilometers from UNISA. This beautiful and elegant guest house is the perfect place to relax while you are away from home. Combining old world charm with contemporary living, Kirkness Guest House will provide a safe and comfortable haven, in the hub of Pretoria.
