Gautrain Information Guide
A QUICK INFORMATION GUIDE TO THE GAUTRAIN
The Gautrain offers international standards of public transport, with high levels of safety, reliability, predictability, convenience and comfort.
The Rail connection comprises two links: a north south link between Pretoria’s Hatfield Station and Johannesburg Park Station (‘Commuter Service’), and an east west link between O.R. Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) and Sandton CBD (‘Airport Service’).
Travelling at speeds of up to 160km’s per hour, the train reaches Hatfield from Johannesburg Park Station in about 42 minutes. The trip between the Airport and Sandton takes about 15 minutes.
Other stations are located at: Rhodesfield, Rosebank, Sandton, Marlboro, Midrand, Centurion, Pretoria and Hatfield.
The Gautrain system includes:
- Drop-off and parking facilities at all stations (except ORTIA)
- A dedicated bus system.
These services are fully integrated and may be used separetly or jointly by transferring from one to another.
The services are all accessed by means of a contactless smart card – your Gold Card.
Additional services include Car Rental facilities at Johannesburg Park Station, Sandton and Pretoria Stations.
Your Gold Card
The Gautrain Gold Card allows you to enjoy seemless transfers between all their services.
You will use the same card to access and pay for train trips, parking fees and bus rides.
Cash is not accepted on trains, busses or parking booms.
You can purchase a gold card from the ticket vending machines or the ticket offices.
Each passenger must have their own gold card and they must use the same card to tag in and out of the system.
The gold card itself cost R10.00 and is valid for five years. You simply top up value or travel products at any ticket vending machine. Payments can be made in cash, or by using a debit or credit card.
If you enter a Gautrain parking facility without a gold card, simply take the paper ticket at the entrance boom. Then buy a gold card at the station in order to use a train or a bus or to exit the parking. Remember to load enough value onto your gold card to also pay for your parking when you exit.
When you get to the exit gate simply insert your paper ticket and hold your gold card against the scanner. The correct fee with automatically be deducted from your gold card.
The first 15 minutes of parking is free, but after that you will pay a flat rate of R10.00 for the first 24 hours, as long as you’ve also used the train.
